Emily in Darkness

Posted by CloudsideCastles - June 15th, 2024

There is a mobile game I can't find anything about but I clearly remember playing back in highschool, Emily in Darkness. At least I think that's how it was called.

It had top-down view and very nice drawn art style, with gameplay somehow reminding me about Binding of Isaac but without roguelite elements (I think). You had to navigate through the labyrinth while shooting at enemies with your own blood, trying to find the door to the next level. World was monochrome and dark, characters who didn't attack you were rare (I encountered only one before stopping playing, an elderly woman with bandages on her eyes), looking injured and downright bizarre, which created pretty lonely and unsettling atmosphere.

The plot was that the protagonist, Emily, found herself in the woods and shortly after that got shot, but instead of simply dying she woke up in some sort of a dark maze/catacombs/weird building-looking place, and had to navigate it to find her way out. I didn't get too far in the game because it was pretty difficult. I'm pretty sure I left out a lot of secrets and couldn't get into a lot of rooms before moving onto the next levels. One of the rooms had its only entrance covered in spikes and I didn't want to risk it, pretty sure it was some puzzle I didn't get. I only got through the first few of the levels. I remember I stopped playing at the first cutscene outside the intro since my English was very bad back then so I didn't understand anything and put the game down to return to it later. But my phone got broken at some point so I couldn't finish it, and when I tried to search for it again years later I only found some article about how it was only available on IOS while I played it on Android. And later on I couldn't find anything about that game at all no matter how hard I searched. I wonder if someone remembers it.
